That once
upon a time, there were six blind but very wise men. People from all walks of life sought
for their wisdom; from all over the world. One day,
these men came together for a minor expedition. On their way, they
came a cross an elephant. Since they were all blind, using their sense of touch, they each gave out individual assessments of what the
elephant was.
The first one happened to fall against the broad and sturdy side of the elephant, and concluded that the elephant was very much like a wall.
The second one, felt the tusk and said the elephant was very much like a spear.
The third one took the squirming trunk in his hands and said that the elephant was very much like a snake.
The fourth one, reached out and touched the elephant’s knee. He concluded that the elephant was very much like a tree.
The fifth one happened to touch the ear, and insisted that the elephant was like a fan.
And the sixth one seized the swinging tail, and said that the elephant was a rope.
Each of these blind men was partly right based on
their individual feelings of touch. But at the same time, they were all
wrong. The funny part of it was that; their started disputing each
others description of what the elephant looked like. Their dispute stemmed from
sheer ignorance.None of them had ever seen an elephant! They were all
born blind.
The moral of the story is: It is always relevant that we be honest with ourselves. It is good to seek for help in areas we are least capable of.
