Communication becomes complete when there is ‘the giver’
and ‘the receiver’.
‘An active listener is one who incorporates listening with
concentration. I like to listen. I have learnt a great deal from listening
carefully. Most people never listen.’ Ernest Hemingway.
Barriers to Active
Listening.
Pre-mature Judgement. This may arise out of the clothes. Looks
or even the voice of the communicator or the receiver in any communication set
up. Funnily, sometimes it doesn’t help people to tell them that ‘I know how you
feel’ or ‘I appreciate your position’.
You’ve got to prove by the choice of
your words, the tone of your voice and even the rate of your speech.
Distractions leading to giving less attention in a
communication set up.
As you communicate, let it be at the back of your mind,
that the content of your message more often, plays a mere part in the
interpersonal communication. Your emotions and your feelings have to be
recognized. It is advised that you accompany your verbal responses with non
verbal responses, i.e. by nodding your head.
Perhaps each and every one of us might
have been in involved, or witnessed a conversation where one party comes up and
say, ‘you just din’t get it’. It simply symbolizes a communication or listening
brake down along the way.
To ensure successful business life,
listening and communication skills are a must. Lack of active listening and
communication may lead to irretrievable mistakes, poor customer service,
misguided goals, loss of precious time, loss of trust amongst team members and
the list is just endless.
